A 3.7 magnitude earthquake has rocked a small town in southwestern Victoria after Sunday's 5.0 magnitude quake.

Vic Emergency issued the warning for Apollo Bay and surrounds and said the earthquake occurred at 1.17pm on Monday.

The emergency body said the incident resulted in 'little to no damage,' however advised residents that aftershocks could occur.

If that happens locals are advised to drop to the ground, take cover under a study table (or a similar piece of furniture), hold on until the shaking stops, and keep up-to-date with emergency broadcasts.

On Sunday, impacts of a 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck the tourist towns of Colac at 2.11am, before a secondary 3.6 magnitude aftershock was felt in Apollo Bay at 5.44am.

Impacts of the tremor were felt by more than 8,300 people, according to Geoscience Australia, with residents in Melbourne recording minor damage.

The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) said a 'couple of calls' were made for emergency assistance, however 'only minor damage reported and no injuries'.

Reports came from as far north as towns along the NSW-Victoria border and as far south as Tasmania's King Island.

The quake was also felt throughout Melbourne in the suburbs of Reservoir, Sunshine and St Kilda.

There were also reports of minor damage including broken walls.

Monday afternoon's tremor is the third earthquake to rock the state this month, after residents in Lakes Entrance, a coastal town in the state's east, was hit with a 3.0 magnitude earthquake.

Vic Emergency is due to issue its next update at 8.10pm on Monday. Residents in affected areas are advised to contact the SES on 132 500, if required.
